4 June 2004: New XBox Kernel problem
The Kernel 5713 doesn't accept a downgrade of the Dashboard. So there is no way to use the standard Software-Hacks at the moment (neither Mechinstall nor SplinterCell). You can try to flash the TSPO or you have to use a Modchip. For the time being there is no easy way to run Linux at the Crystal Xbox or other very new Xboxes.
22 April 2004: Xebian 1.0.2 released!
Ed has released Xebian 1.0.2 today! Some new features include: Freevo (http://freevo.sourceforge.net) is now included, and improved Xbox-IR remote support also. Hopefully, the FOCUS video support, particularly for HDTV should be improved also. As always, user feedback is welcome, either to the mailing lists, or the Xbox-Linux IRC channel #xbox-linux on irc.oftc.net. Get it here (http://prdownloads.sourceforge.net/xbox-linux/dist-1.0.2.tar.bz2?download)!
10 April 2004: Crystal Xbox update
Good news for everyone wanting to buy a pretty Crystal European special edition xbox. Several team members now own them, and have found that they appear to be just normal 1.4 hardware revision Xboxes, and they work fine with Linux. (Users planning to use the MechInstaller exploit should be aware that the dashboard versions included is too new to be vulnerable to the exploit. (Dash 5659 and Kernel 5713 on mine)
18 March 2004: Xebian project requests donations
The Xebian project is now taking donations towards the cost of supporting new xboxes, as well as ongoing development. If you'd like to donate, go to www.paypal.de and donate to hostmaster@ed-soft.at
12 March 2004: Using MechInstaller with Action Replay
Sam Lucas has written a tutorial about how to use an Action Replay for MechInstaller. Read it here (http://www.xbox-linux.org/docs/howtoar.html) and post your experiences here. (By the way: There is at least one 'Crystal' Xbox with a Focus encoder - let's see...)
03 March 2004: Beware special edition 'Crystal' Xboxes
It is rumoured that the new white special edition Crystal xboxes due for release soon in Europe and elsewhere have a different video encoder chip (Again!). If this is true, Linux video output will be unusable. We advise against purchasing it for use with Linux for the time being, until we are able to check it out, and make the necessary changes to accommodate it.
25 February 2004: New Xebian 1.0.1 released!
Ed has released a new Xebian, version 1.0.1! Some of the new features are: Improved video driver for newer xboxes - the overscanning is fixed for almost all users, and the filesystem has been changed from reiserfs to ext3 (Cromwell users will require the latest cromwell 2.29 to use) - get it here
10 February 2004: Better Focus Support
Better driver code for composite and RGB output is in the CVS and has been tested on PAL Xboxes, but not on NTSC. If you have an Xbox manufactured since August 2003, please test the new kernel in the CVS and report to the people in the IRC.

Ed's released a new from the ground up Xebian! 1.0.0-beta1 (http://prdownloads.sourceforge.net/xbox-linux/dist-1.0.0-beta1.tar.bz2?download) is once again based on woody and the 2.4.23-rc5 kernel. This means the kernel has some intial support for v1.5 Xboxes and uses the cleanroom nvnet replacement 'forcedeth'. Note to users: it's marked beta as we need people to test it and offer feedback. Remember to stop by our irc channel here, to let us know. (irc://irc.oftc.net/#xbox-linux)
27 November 2003: Need Help?

01 November 2003: Xbox Linux Multimedia Project
Xbox Linux works well for those who want to use their Xbox as a Linux desktop computer or as a server. The Xbox Linux Multimedia Project, lead by Rob Reilink, aims to create a small Linux system for multimedia applications, and, in long term, to make application development with the XDK obsolete. Read about it here (http://www.xbox-linux.org/docs/multimedia.html)
31 October 2003: New Xbox factory
There seems to be a new Xbox factory ("06") in China, which seems to produce the incredible amount of 700,000 Xboxes per week on only two assembly lines (Doumen ("05") makes about 200,000 per week on four lines at the moment). They started production in March, and made several breaks, the last one was all of July. All "06" Xboxes are high-quality Samsung/Seagate and are sold in the USA and Canada only (NTSC). There seems to be nothing special about these devices. Thanks to all contributors (http://www.xbox-linux.org/docs/versionsentry.html).
27 October 2003: Be careful if you buy a new Xbox!
The Xbox Version Database (http://www.xbox-linux.org/docs/versionsentry.html) tells us that all Xboxes since 2003-07-24 have the new Focus video encoder, which is not supported by Xbox Linux yet (i.e. no picture in Linux). Interestingly, almost all Xboxes manufactured from June to mid-July are Samsung/Western Digital and all Xboxes since mid-July are Thomson/Seagate.
17 October 2003: The Xbox Manufacturing Process
Thanks to everyone contributing to the Xbox Version Database (http://www.xbox-linux.org/docs/versionsentry.html), now we know quite a deal about how Xboxes are made, and also have some information about the three different factories. Read it here.

14 October 2003: Ed's Xebian(Formerly Debian) 0.5.0 Released *Updated*
- Changes: now based on the Debian unstable tree, includes the latest and greatest kernel patches especially the new xboxfb driver, Install cd is more Live oriented w/ Xfce4 as DE, installs Gnome2.2 by default and many more great apps!
*Update* We're not really sure whats going on with sf.net mirrors, but the upload seemed to get corrupted somewhere along the way, so its been deleted for the mean time. It will be re-uploaded sometime before the end of the week.
13 October 2003: Finding out your Xbox Version
- without opening it! The manufacturing date and the serial can tell you a lot. Read on here (http://www.xbox-linux.org/docs/versionsfinding.html). Thanks a lot to everyone who has contributed to the Xbox Version Database (http://www.xbox-linux.org/docs/versionsentry.html) so far.
12 October 2003: "Project B" is not complete yet!
Yes, we can run Linux without opening the Xbox, but this does not mean that everything has been accomplished yet. Read the original rules (http://www.xbox-linux.org/docs/rulesprojectb.html) for more information.
11 October 2003: Sdoradus' commentary on Microsoft deleting user data
The article about the forced update of the dashboard for non-Xbox-Live users (that may delete user data) now also features a commentary that cites rulings on AOL and Dell lawsuits. Microsoft, stop this, we mean it.
10 October 2003: Xbox Hardware Database is online!
If you want to buy an Xbox, the Xbox Hardware Database (http://www.xbox-linux.org/docs/versionsdb.html) can help you find out what's in the Xbox without opening the box - even though the list is still quite short. And don't forget, please enter your Xbox data into this form (http://www.xbox-linux.org/docs/versionsentry.html). Thanks to all contributors!
9 October 2003: RAM chips at lowest price possible
Thomas Wuensche, a supporter of the Xbox Linux Project, has bought 268 "Samsung K4D263238D-QC50" RAM chips and is willing to sell sets of four chips for 40 EUR (+shipping) to Xbox enthusiasts. He does not guarantee that they work in all Xboxes, and that you will be able to successfully solder them into your device. If you are interested, please email him (mailto:wuensche@ems-wuensche.com).
8 October 2003: Help us build an Xbox Versions Database!
Please enter your Xbox data into this form (http://www.xbox-linux.org/docs/versionsentry.html) (you needn't fill all fields), so we can provide you a database that will help you find out the contents of an Xbox without opening it. This database will be online next week.
6 October 2003: Microsoft Network features us - and thinks we're cheaters!
Go to www.msn.com and enter "xbox cheats": The results (http://search.msn.com/results.aspx?q=xbox+cheats&FORM=SMCRT) will show the Xbox Linux Project on rank #1 as a "Featured Site" and as a "Top Pick". Thanks, Microsoft, we think the project deserves your decoration, but, hey, the Linux savegame is not for cheating. ;-)
5 October 2003: How to void your warranty
True, you may not void your warranty when you install Linux, but you probably do, if you do this (http://www.xbox-linux.org/pic/xbox-warranty.jpg) to your Xbox. Look closely.
4 October 2003: Running Linux on the Xbox
The LinuxJournal article from July is now availably on this site. It's a bit outdated (you need no modchip any more), but still a good introduction and overview, for the interested, for users, and for developers. Read it here.
3 October 2003: Will I void my warranty when opening my Xbox or running Linux on the Xbox?
Not necessarily. Many people confuse Microsoft's Xbox "insurance" with the "warranty by law". Read this new FAQ entry why it's not that easy. Comments appreciated.
2 October 2003: Running Linux on the Xbox is legal!
The other day, I bought some lemonade, but I didn't drink it, I was using it as a basis for a sweet-and-sour soup - now the police arrested me for it. Sounds unbelievable? Read here, why it cannot be illegal to run Linux on your Xbox.
1 October 2003: Ed needs a new job
EDGAR HUCEK, Linux kernel wizard, maintainer of the Debian distribution for the Xbox, Xbox security researcher, and VIENNA/AUSTRIA resident, is looking for a job as a programmer or systems administrator. Please contact hostmaster@ed-soft.at (mailto:hostmaster@ed-soft.at)
30 September 2003: We're looking for a 1.4/1.5 Xbox!
The new series of Xboxes has a different video encoder chip ("Focus" instead of "Conexant"), which needs to be supported in Linux. If you can help us get one (or more), please tell Michael (mailto:mist@c64.org?Subject=Xbox%20with%20Focus%20Encoder) or the mailing list, and we will be forever thankful.
29 September 2003: Translators needed!
The website supports multiple languages now. If your native language is any other than English, please pick a document, tell Michael (mailto:mist@c64.org?Subject=Documentation), get the XML source (replace "docs" with "xml/en" in the URL), open it in a text editor, translate it and send it back to Michael. If your native language is English, please do the same, correcting typos and grammar. Details here (http://www.xbox-linux.org/docs/docsystem.html).
28 September 2003: 3 Million Visitors
The Oktoberfest 2003 in Munich is celebrating 3 million visitors after its first week; and they have sold 2.3 million liters of beer. After only 16 months, the Xbox Linux project is also celebrating 3 million visitors - and even if all beer on the Oktoberfest were free beer: Xbox Linux is about free speech!
27 September 2003: Microsoft's first reply concerning the forced online update
After having no luck with the hotline, I asked how to undo the unwanted forced online update, and they replied: "Reversing the automatic dashboard update is quite easy. You only need to wipe the file 'Online Updater Application'." - I very much doubt that deleting the updater will undo the update - ever seen a murder victim come back to life after the execution of the killer?
26 September 2003: Why you shouldn't do TSOP Splitting
Many people use four different ROM images in their 1 MB v1.0 or v1.1 flash - please don't do this. Read why.
25 September 2003: Preventing the Forced Dashboard Online Update
If you have an Xbox, no SW method Linux yet, and a network connection, read the article here.
16 September 2003: Microsoft deleted my data - remotely, without my permission, and... without even bothering to ask!
Read the article here
And read The Xbox Phones Home - without Xbox Live here (http://www.xbox-linux.org/docs/xboxphoneshome.html).
13 September 2003: The Xbox phones home; Microsoft updates your Xbox without your permission!
Even if you don't have subscribed to Xbox Live (and maybe
being subject to the Xbox Live EULA), Microsoft may update the
Dashboard software on your Xbox without notice.
If your network details are correctly set up, and you
select the "XBOX LIVE" entry in your Xbox Dashboard or select
anything that has to do with Xbox Live in a game (although you
have not signed up to the Xbox Live service), the Dashboard
starts "phoning home", retrieving the latest version and
installing it - all you can do to cancel this is turn off your
Xbox.
The Xbox Linux Project considers this action unlawful at
least in the EU, because the Xbox EULA, which would permit
this, is void in the EU.
12 September 2003: Microsoft has updated the Xbox Dashboard:
If you have Xbox Live, and you enter the menu item "XBOX
LIVE" on the Dashboard, Microsoft will do a forced update of
the Xbox Dashboard (=you don't have the choice to say no)
through your internet connection.
The new Dashboard has the font bug fixed, the font
exploit will not work any more.
Downgrading with MechInstaller does not work at this
time, we're working on it...
Don't update your Dashboard, or MechInstaller won't work any
more!
8 September 2003: Support for 128 MB Ram:
After weeks of work by hamtitampti, koitsu & Oliver,
Xbox-Linux now reliably supports 128 MByte of RAM. You need to
solder four additional RAM chips in your Xbox to upgrade it to
128 MB. On the software side you need that latest CVS versions
of Cromwell/Xromwell to detect the additional RAM.
Thanks to
Wolfsoftand (http://www.wolfsoft.de)
Chiptech (http://www.chiptech.de/); both companies
donated 128 MB extensions to the Xbox Linux project, and both
offer to do the hardware modification if you send your
Xbox.
5 September 2003: Just for clarification:
MechInstaller does
nothave the clock bug, unlike all the Ernie & Bert
hacks out there. To the best of our knowledge, MechInstaller is
the only possibility so far to overcome the clock bug.
You can safely use MechInstaller on any Xbox, without any
risk.
4 September 2003: Hmmm...
3 September 2003: Join [http://www.xbox-linux.org/articles.php?aid=1%E2%8A%82=Users%20help%20Users Users help Users]offering your help now,

do the hardware or software modification, copy the
MechInstaller on an Xbox Memory Unit or make an Xbox USB
adapter cable for you. You just visit these people and they
will do it for you - or you can send your hardware, and they
will send the modified hardware back.
If you want to be added to the list, please email
Michael Steil (mailto:mist@c64.org).

11 August 2003: MechInstallerreleased (http://prdownloads.sourceforge.net/xbox-linux/MechInstaller-1.0.zip?download)!
The MechInstaller is basically a combination of the
MechAssault savegame exploit and the font loader dashboard
exploit. Its whole purpose is to provide an easy way for
everyone to permanently install Linux on their unmodded Xbox
and at the same time it allows normal Xbox usage.
You can now easily install Linux on unmodded
Xboxes if they have been prepared by the MechInstaller.
Readmeincluded (http://www.xbox-linux.org/down/MechInstallerREADME.txt).

Slothbox is a Linux distribution based on Slackware, targeted at the Xbox. There is still plenty of work to do, but we are very keen for suggestions / help if people are willing. It is available via the downloadsection (http://www.xbox-linux.org/download.php). Great job Disp and Kestrel.
21 July 2003: ED ISO 0.4.1 available

16 July 2003: While your're waiting for the MechAssault Linux Installer
or the video from LinuxTag demonstrating it, you can listen to German comedians Erkan & Stefan (http://www.br-online.de/bayern3/magazin/comedy/erkanstefan/audios.shtml)(German only; select '16.07.: Linux'), discussing about Linux... and the Xbox. To Erkan & Stefan: Xboxes for Munich might be an alternative!!
14 July 2003: LinuxTag 2003 has been a great success.
We have modified a load of Xboxes to be Linux computers,
fixed some broken boxes, presented Linux Xboxes to the public -
and showed a new method to run Linux on unmodded Xboxes...
available soon!
In the meantime, look at some pictures
here (http://0x63.nu/gallery/linuxtag03).
9 July 2003: Technical Analysis of 007: Agent Under Fire save game hack
Anonymous has written a nice overview of just how the original 007:AUF save game attack was accomplished and obfuscated. You can find it in the documentation section or here (http://www.xbox-linux.org/articles.php?aid=2003189065649).
7 July 2003: USB support in Xbox Linux BIOS ('Cromwell/Xromwell')
Georg Acher managed to make the complete Linux USB stack work in Cromwell: You can now use the Xbox controller in Cromwell/Xromwell's boot menu. Cromwell will be enhanced to be a complete boot menu now. This is also good news for the OpenXDKproject (http://openxdk.sourceforge.net/): They may now be able to adapt the USB stack to their code.
5 July 2003: New Article:
Xbox Linux on Unmodded Xbox / Xbox Linux without Modchipby (http://www.xbox-linux.org/articles.php?aid=1%E2%8A%82=Xbox%20Linux%20on%20Unmodded%20Xbox%20/%20Xbox%20Linux%20without%20Modchip) Michael Steil
4 July 2003: Xbox VGA Mini HOWTO
by Oliver Schwartz is available here (http://www.xbox-linux.org/articles.php?aid=1%E2%8A%82=Xbox%20VGA%20Mini%20HOWTO). It contains video signal basics, as well as information about the adaptor and Linux settings.
3 July 2003: Permanent Linux on unmodded Xbox
It's summarized on
ZDnetand (http://www.zdnet.com.au/newstech/security/story/0,2000048600,20275965,00.htm) explained in detail (including download)
here (http://lists.netsys.com/pipermail/full-disclosure/2003-July/006217.html): Using one of the 007/MechAssault hacks, you can now
permanently install Linux onto the hard disk, so that it boots
every time you turn the Xbox on - without ever opening the
Xbox. You can even eject the DVD drive. It works by replacing
two font files of the Dashboard.
The hack has been confirmed to work.
A comment of the group free-x, who is responsible for
this, can be found
here (http://www.maxconsole.com/?topic=news&sys=all&article=230).
Warning: If Linux is installed this way, and the Xbox
loses the time (because it had been unplugged for several
hours), it might be impossible to remove Linux for you right
now (Linux will always start instead of anything you put into
the DVD drive) , but a solution is being worked on right now.
(If you have a booting Linux, you can uninstall it by editing
the files on C: again, if you only have the default.xbe without
a booting Linux, there is currently no way...)
27 June 2003: Possible full hack
ZDnet reportsthat (http://www.zdnet.com.au/newstech/security/story/0,2000048600,20275810,00.htm) a group of Xbox security researchers
claims to have found additional attacks, one of which aims the
Xbox Dashboard. This group is said to have approached Microsoft
asking for a signed Linux bootloader in exchange for not
publishing the exploits.
Although this is very interesting news, the Xbox Linux
Project wants to clarify that the aforementioned group of Xbox
security researchers is not the Xbox Linux Project.
25 June 2003: Second solution for Project B issued
As posted earlier, there is a
file on the Xboxhacker.net forumsthat (http://www.xboxhacker.net/forums/index.php?act=ST&f=12&t=11849&s=050bd8dd8b7dc2356663386ec6ac2394) is supposed to run
Linux on an unmodified box usin the Microsoft game "Mech
Assault". We can now confirm
that it works- there seem to be quite
some more vulnerable games out there!
You can do the same trick as with the 007linux exploit
(memory stick or swapped hard disk with the hacked savegame and
the Xbox-Linux-signed bootloader XBE), and you'll get the Item
"Run Linux" when loading a savegame.
Using the
keypublished (http://www.xboxhacker.net/forums/index.php?act=ST&f=12&t=11751&s=5336f5f8b1a94d735a380abcc930d812) on Xboxhacker.net earlier, everyone can sign
their Xbox Linux bootloader themselves now and run it on an
unmodified box either using the game "007 Agent Under Fire" or
"Mech Assault".
23 June 2003: Another Project B solution?
On Xboxhacker.net (http://www.xboxhacker.net/forums/index.php?act=ST&f=12&t=11849&s=050bd8dd8b7dc2356663386ec6ac2394), there is a post containing another uuencoded exploit savegame, this time it is Mech Assault. We haven't been able to verify this yet, but since the author is the same as the one who posted the 007linux RSA key, we are confident that it is no fake. We'll keep you updated.
29 May 2003: Xodus Chameleon Cromwell Source released
This version of Cromwell, which has been developed by Xodus, includes working code to write to the Flash; they released it now that the Chameleon chip is shipping. You can download the file here (http://www.xbox-linux.org/down/1.8+flash_c.tar.gz).
22 May 2003: Ed's Debian gets its own website.
[http://www.xbox-linux.org/debian/ The Debian pages]focus on serving introductory information, hints, tips, direct links to installation tutorials and fresh news. With status reports, TO-DO lists, future goals and open issues on public display it is easier to see what needs to be worked on and where the Xbox Debian project is currently heading to. New developersare always welcome; if you feel like contributing, [http://www.xbox-linux.org/debian/ come and join in!]
14 May 2003: New ways to use your Linux Xbox
Daniel Nashed has installed [http://xbox.nashcom.de/ the first permanent webserver]on the internet running on an Xbox with Xbox Linux and a Domino server installed. John Snowdon has [http://www.target-earth.net/xbox/ installed an Xbox with Linux and freevo in his car]. What are you doing with your Xbox? Tell us (mailto:mist@c64.org)!

31 March 2003: First solution for Project B issued
Habibi_xbox has released a small
savegamefor (http://www.xbox-linux.org/down/007linux.txt)
007 Agent Under Fireon (http://www.xbox.com/007agentunderfire/default.htm?cs_catalog=cat%2dus) Xboxhacker (See
herefor (http://www.xboxhacker.net/forums/index.php?act=ST&f=12&t=10520) original thread). We have now confirmed this
savegame can be made to boot the Xbox Linux Live Plugin Distro
on an unmodified Xbox! Note you can get video working by
telnetting to the box, using
wget -o xbv
http://cvs.sourceforge.net/cgi-bin/viewcvs.cgi/*checkout*/xbox-linux/xbv/xbv?rev=1.16
chmod +x xbv
./xbv -m 0
We will be building on Habibi_xbox's work and releasing more ways to run Linux on your unmodified Xbox.
This represents the first confirmed success in the Project B competition (http://www.xbox-linux.org/articles.php?aid=20030023081956), which runs until December 31st 2003. As it is still not possible to use this exploit purely from HDD or USB dongle on an unmodded box (you must use a retail DVD of "007 Agent Under Fire" only), we hope this won't be the last great Project B entry we see.

5 March 2003: Xbox Linux ask EU Antitrust commission to look at Xbox PC
On Monday 3rd March we sent a fax to the EU Antitrust authorities complaining about Microsoft's monopolistic behaviour with their Xbox PC device. We are particularly concerned with Microsoft's use of the DMCA to equate modchips only with illegal piracy, when all non-Microsoft software for the Xbox PC - including Linux - needs a modchip. You can read our fax here (http://www.xbox-linux.org/articles.php?aid=20030062171641)- now available in Spanishthanks (http://www.xconsolas.com/xbox-linux/documentacion/carta_abierta_antitrust_authorities.html) to Miguel Lara Garcia, and Frenchtoo (http://www.xbox-linux.org/articles.php?aid=20030070025208) thanks to Oliver Fauchon.
